Presentation of main questions concerning Western, Eastern and Southern Slavonic territory in the oldest and younger phases of the early Middle Ages.

Learning outcomes
Student:
1) gains the basic knowledge of: the history of the origins of the states in early medieval Europe, especially the early Piasts' state and other Slavonic states (Great Moravia, the Czech Republic, Russia) and the role of tribal structures in their origin; beliefs and the pantheon of Slavonic deities, Christianization of the Polish lands in the early Middle Ages; Medieval material culture;
2) gains the understanding of: the role of interdisciplinary studies for the study on Middle Ages; the role of the study on Middle Ages for comprehending contemporary culture;
3) gains the skills necessary to: recognise medieval forms of settlement and types of artefacts: weapons, objects of everyday use etc.; recognise forms of medieval architecture (palatia, churches, castles) and other medieval works of art; comprehend, summarize and comment upon books and papers concerning Middle Ages; can use properly basic terminology; prepare oral presentations; conduct the library query and research; compare different theories referring to the Middle Ages; summarize discussions and draw conclusions; work in a group.
Assessment criteria
Active participation in classes, individual presentation, final quiz, final oral exam.
