History of the Dutch language 15-HJN-NID-11
The aim of this course is to provide students with a broad understanding of the evolution of the Dutch language through the Middle Ages, Renaissance, till today with the focus on the modern varieties of Dutch: the Netherlandic Dutch and the Belgian Dutch. We will have a look at its genetic background and as well as the extra-linguistic factors that have influenced the Dutch language at all stages of its development. We also will focus on the contemporary regional varieties of Dutch and their special features (spelling, sound, lexicon and grammar).
The course content includes:
-Language and its origin
-Genetic relation between languages and language universals
-The development of the Germanic language family
-Old Dutch
-Middle Dutch
-Dutch language in the 16th and 17th century
-Dutch language in the 18th and 19th century
-Contemporary varieties of Dutch - the north (the Netherlands) and the south (Flanders)
-Vlaamse tussentaal (Flemish interlanguage) - a contemporary variety of Dutch spoken in Belgium
-Dutch language outside the Netherlands and Flanders

After completing the course the students can:
-identify the main trends of the historical development of the Dutch language and its features in a given period
-understand and interpret texts representing different phases of the development of the Dutch language
-characterize the Dutch against other Germanic languages
-distinguish between the modern varieties of the Dutch language and identify the basic differences between them
-explain the origin of language
-read with understanding and critically analyze scientific and popular texts written in Dutch concerning the development of the Dutch language
-explain the basic concepts of the history of the language
-give a short speech on the history of the Dutch language
Assessment criteria
During the semester there are two tests consisting of several short open questions and s task of recognizing the characteristic features of the Old and Middle Dutch (Test 1) and the Flemish interlanguage (Vlaamse tussentaal, test 2). The course is considered passed if the average of the two tests is equal to or higher than 61%.
Assessment criteria:
90% - 100%: very good (very good; 5.0)
82% - 89%: good plus (+ db, 4.5)
75% - 81%: good (db, 4.0)
67% - 74%: satisfactory (+ dst; 3.5)
61% - 66%: low pass (dst, 3.0)
less than 61%: failed (ndst, 2.0)
