History of Ireland 15-HI-CE-11
The series of lectures will acquaint students with the early history of Ireland from the prehistoric times of various waves of human settlement, through the Celtic settlements of the 4/5th centuries BC, the development of Gaelic Ireland, the later Christianisation of the island to the Viking and Anglo-Norman presence in Ireland. The lecture will also detail times from Early Modernity (Tudor conquest, Plantations, Protestant Ascendency, Catholic discrimination, 18th century rebellions), Mid Modernity (Act of Union, Catholic Emancipation, Great Hunger, Home Rule) and Contemporary Times (Partition of Ireland, The Irish Civil War, the Irish Free State, the 20th century history of The Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland, Troubles as well as the most recent events in the history of both countries).
Students will be required to complete post-lecture quizzes to reinforce their knowledge, write essays as well as take two tests – one will the material from prehistoric Ireland to the end of the Lordship of Ireland and the second from the establishment of the Kingdom of Ireland to contemporary times.
