Phonetics of Dutch 15-FJN-NID-12
(First semester of a two-semester course. Continued as 15-FJN-NID-22 in the second semester.)
The course introduces students to the sound systems of languages, and to the principles used in the characterization of speech sounds. It also addresses pronunciation problems arising from phonetic and phonological contrasts between Polish and Dutch. By the end of the course, students are expected to be able to use the appropriate phonetic terminology and systems of transcription to describe the Dutch sounds, analyze and assess the articulatory features of the Dutch sound system, name and describe the main areas of difficulty in pronunciation for Polish speakers of Dutch, apply the appropriate mechanical articulation required in the target sounds and pronounce most target sounds accurately.
