The course in Didactics of English as a Foreign Language is part of the teacher training programme, whose main aim is to prepare students for their future work as teachers of English. The course objectives include familiarizing the students with the goals of teaching English in Polish state schools, the learner characteristics and the role of individual differences in the process of foreign language learning, characteristics of effective teachers and their competencies, teacher roles and teaching styles, principles of effective classroom management, ways of developing learner autonomy, criteria for selection and evaluation of various teaching materials and the use of technology in the language classroom. During the course students will learn how to plan effective lessons during which they will introduce, practice and test the four language skills (listening, reading, speaking and writing) and the three language systems (pronunciation, vocabulary and grammar) following the principles of the communicative approach. Major sources and types of errors together with the different ways of dealing with them will also be discussed. Finally, selected techniques of using literature, film, songs and games in language teaching will be introduced. The course will end with an overview of ways in which teachers can foster their further professional development.
