Modern Chinese literature 15-CLW-CH-11
This course is about to present the history and evolution of contemporary Chinese literature.
The main aim is to:
* familiarize participants with selected, representative works and the main ideas of this epoch;
* to repeat and consolidate information on literary genres;
* to analyze Chinese literature and to compare it with Western literature;
* to experience the contact with Chinese-language literature and get the basic knowledge of the most important works and authors;
* and finally, to bring Chinese culture closer through literature.
Students are also supposed to develop their ability to understand and interpret the text being read and to prepare a written expression (review, essay, etc.) on the basis of texts.
The following contents are covered:
20th century Chinese literature:
Literatura XX wieku:
- the 4th May Movement,the New Culture Movement, the linguistic reform, socrealistic literature, cultural revolution, documentary literature, contemporary trends
- Hu Shi, Wen Yiduo, Xu Zhimo, Bian Zhilin, Dai Wangshu, Ai Qing, Gu CHeng
- Mei Lanfang, Cao Yu, Tian Han
- Chen Duxiu, Lu Xun, Ba Jin, Mao Dun, Yu Dafu, Shen Congwen, Ding Ling, Lao She, Mao Zedong
- Chinese Nobel Prize winners: Gao Xingjian i Liao Yiwu

Learning outcomes
After a successful completion of the course, a student:
- knows the history of contemporary Chinese literature;
- lists literary works characteristic of the epoch;
recognizes the similarities and differences between Cinese and European literary works;
- finds information about the discussed topics in different sources;
- formulates critical opinions about the discussed issues;
- individually prepares written works on assigned topics;
- is willing to get to familiarize themselves with the works of Chinese literature/film/drama;
- is willing to participate in discussions about literature and culture on the basis of the acquired knowledge;
- cares about the quality of oral and written output;
- is aware of the role played by literature in Chinese society.
Assessment criteria
Tests for continuous assessment, written assignments.
