The main objective of this course is to develop students' mastery of Englishto the lower advanced level (B2+)
Topics covered include: first impressions (age, language, body language, customs and traditions), travelling (popular places, tourist attractions), keeping in touch (methods of communication), social-networking sites, career paths, techniques for improving one’s memory, cooking recipes, dream jobs, business correspondence (the secrets of formal writing), communications technology, the world of work – psychology of success, inventions, academic writing (sociology, history, economics, law, psychology), social changes, fashion, the language of advertising, family life, addictions, parapsychology, horoscopes and personality, tattoos,
examinations;
Grammar course includes the following topics: nouns (gender, possessive case, singular and
plural forms), subject-verb agreement (incl. special cases), Countable and uncountable nouns, collocations (partitives), articles (use with common nouns, proper nouns), quantifiers, pronouns, modal verbs, English tenses, passive voice, conditionals (incl. inversion in conditionals), wish/if only, would rather/sooner, it’s (high) time, relative clauses, phrasal verbs, prepositions;
Phonetics course includes: basic rules of English phonetics

Learning outcomes
After the course the student:
Understands main ideas of written texts, including texts on contemporary and abstract topics.
Understands discussion and other spoken texts, including texts on abstract topics.
Is able to communicate fluently and spontaneously using a style appropriate for the situational context, including communication with native speakers of English.
Can write clear, concise texts that are grammatically correct, using appropriate style for the situational context.
Has mastered correct pronunciation and intonation of English.
Has achieved basic cultural knowledge of the English-speaking countries.
Assessment criteria
Requirements to complete the course: a series of written tests, obligatory reading, oral presentations and essays.
Max. 2 absences allowed per semester.
The final grade based on the result of the final examination.
