Fundamentals of chemistry 02-PCHL
Lecture: Basic terms and definitions. Chemical laws. Atom structure. Periodic system of elements. Chemical bonds. Intermolecular interactions. Types of chemical reactions. Heat of chemical reactions. General characteristics of states of matter. Rate of chemical reactions. Catalytic reactions. Chemical equilibria. Law of mass action. Redox reactions. Ionic reactions. Ionic equilibria. Acids and bases. The basics of complex compounds. Laboratory: Laboratory equipment and laboratory techniques. Chemical laws. Periodic system of elements. Properties of chemical compounds. Law of mass action. Establishing chemical formulae. Redox reactions. Reaction rate. Preparation of simple chemical compounds. Electrolysis. LEARNING OUTCOMES: After completing the course, students will learn the knowledge concerning the basics of chemistry problems, particularly those necessary to take subsequent courses. They will learn atom structure and will understand relations between atom structure and types of chemical bonds and properties of molecules. They will be capable of using information contained in the periodic system and will understand the dependence of properties of elements on their place in the periodic table of elements. Students will learn how to write equations of different chemical reactions and, during classes in chemical calculations, will familiarize with quantitative relations concerning the reaction course. They will make themselves acquainted with factors determining the direction of reaction, its rate and equilibrium position. They will familiarize with reactions of acids and bases and with basic problems of electron transfer reactions and complexation reactions. Students will learn basic laboratory techniques, preparation of simple compounds and analysis of their properties. The experiments performed will help them with understanding problems presented during the course "Fundamentals of Chemistry".
