Eurasia Compared (Political History of Central Asia) 14-XEUAS
This course offers a comparative political history of Eurasia. By looking at the common history and culture of this diversified region the course aims to explain its ties to our Western civilizations. By analyzing the struggle of Chinese, Russian and Islamic interests before and after the fall of the USSR this course will provide insights that allow students to differentiate the Central Asian countries on the one hand and draw parallels between them on the other. Moreover some thematic, contemporary issues of Eurasia will be addressed like energy-politics, ethnic conflicts, authoritarianism, the role of militant Islam, etc.
• Students will acquire deep and detailed information, which allows them to analyze Central Asia in its historical contexts and link its contemporary problems within frameworks of international relations, comparative politics and political science.

Efekty kształcenia
Understand the political, social and cultural impact of CA in world history.
Be able to draw parallels between historic times and know regarding topics such as: clan politics, nomadism, religious cultures, national identity, etc.
Understand the legacy of the Silk Road network for the region’s economy then and now.
Understand the political, economic and cultural transformation of Tsarist colonization and Soviet rule for this region
Acquire country-specific and issue-specific knowledge for the 5 CA countries.
Understand the geopolitical “Great Games” then and now in its historic context
Be able to analyze individual country behaviour through its history and political characteristics.
Are able to write an in-depth analysis on selected aspects of CA due to their knowledge of its history and specific political characteristics.
Kryteria oceniania
Attendance (40 %) and a final paper (+ Small homeworks 60%), which will be defended at the end of the semester. For Polish students: Attendance (40%) and a final paper (60%).
