MAXQDA: computer software for qualitative and mixed methods data analysis 24-SODU-S-MAX
Course objectives:
1. to ground the knowledge of qualitative research gained at earlier stages of studies in practical exercised with actual qualitative data. Students usually have little practical experience in the application of concepts acquired in previous education stages The course should enable to apply the theoretical knowledge about qualitative data analysis in practice;
2. to teach how to use basic and advanced Maxqda functions:
- importing various types of data
- computer-assisted transcription
- coding and assigning variables
- performing lexical analyses
- creating paraphrases and memos
- creating visualizations.
3. to show examples of using the CAQDAS software in social research and analysis of existing data. Examples from recent research projects are used in which Maxqda has been applied.

Learning outcomes
Obtaining credits, the student is able to:
1. list basic strategies for conducting qualitative and mixed research and qualitative analysis of text and graphic material and illustrate them with examples
2. collect various types of existing data and prepare them for qualitative analysis.
3. perform qualitative analysis of text and graphic material using the MAXQDA software
Assessment criteria
There are two forms of obtaining credits to choose from:
(a) Pass the Final test: perform a set of tasks using MAXQDA (extraction, preparation and analysis of data using the techniques and tools learned throughout the course);
(b) Prepare and execute student's own mini research project based on qualitative data analysis using MAXQDA (a written or multimedia presentation of the project's aims, assummptions, methods and results is required as well as mx18 file containing results).
Evaluation criteria:
(1) Scope of material and analysis
(2) Correct use of the software.
