Module learning aims

1. Introducing general practical knowledge concerning written translation from Polish into English. 2. Introducing general practical knowledge concerning oral translation from Polish into English. 3. Developing the skill of written translation from Polish into English. 4. Developing the skill of oral translation from Polish into English in a consecutive mode. 5. Acquiring new and expanding the existing English vocabulary in selected registers via written and oral translation practice. 6. Developing communication skills in English.

Methods of teaching for learning outcomes achievement

1) Comparing source and target texts, analyzing translation strategies, having discussions on the methods of written translation, creating posters "Skills and competences of written translators." 2) Watching films about the work of EU interpreters (e.g. Whisperers), reading articles about modes and methods of interpreting, having discussions on the challenges of interpreters' work, creating posters "Skills and competences of interpreters." 3) Practical exercises in written translation: translating tourist brochures, leaflets, advertisements, uncomplicated business texts, descriptions, recipes and political speeches. Finding and correcting mistakes in target texts, discussing the mistakes with other students, peer correction. 4) Practical exercises in (consecutive) interpreting: translating orally other students' presentations, political speeches, interpreting during simulations of conferences and business meetings (liason and consecutive mode). Performing a vista interpretation: interpreting documents and Power Point presentations. 5) Describing pictures with the use of thematically-related vocabulary, role-play activities which focus on acting out dialogues written with the use of thematic vocabulary lists.

Learning outcomes

After successfully completing the course the student:

1. Is able to recall and recognize major rules applied when producing a written translation from Polish into English.
2. Is able to recall and recognize major rules applied when producing an oral translation from Polish into English.
3. Knows the rules applied in written translation.
4. Knows the rules applied in oral translation in a consecutive mode.
5. Is able to translate texts written in Polish into English within the range of selected register.
6. Is able to translate orally (in a consecutive mode) speeches delivered in Polish into English within the range of selected register.
7. Is able to use with understanding newly learned English vocabulary from selected registers
8. Is able to effectively communicate in English in various communicative situations applying newly learned vocabulary during translation practice from Polish into English.

Assessment criteria

Methods of assessment:

Formative – discussion during class time; checking pre-class preparation (short tests at the beginning of classes checking knowledge of vocabulary); observation during translation tasks and corrective feedback
