Theory in humanities 15-TWNH-NID-12

(First semester of a two-semester course. Continued as 15-TWNH-NID-22 in the second semester.)

This course focuses on the main trends in twentieth-century literary and culture theory. Lectures will provide background for the readings and explicate them where appropriate and attempt to develop a coherent overall context incorporating relevant philosophical, social and historical perspectives. After completing the course students have a sound knowledge of the history of criticism and theory, are familiar with the most significant philosophers, theorists and critics who wrote and write on the subject of literature, are familiar with the principal methods of literary studies, know the terminology necessary to discuss literary and cultural phenomena, understand critical and theoretical discourse and are capable of participating in discussions on literature and culture.

Evaluation: assessment of students' involvement in class discussion, tests; written exam after the second semester.
