Selected issues in ethics and religious studies 15-SIERS-ES-11
The aim of the course is to acquaint students with selected issues of ethics and religious studies in the UK and US and to teach them how to critically analyze the relationship between religion and the history, politics and culture of the two countries. The topics that will be discussed, include: The history and role of the Church of England in the UK, the Anglican Communion, non-Christian denominations in the UK, the protestant ethic and the spirit of capitalism, the role of Puritan ethics in shaping American political institutions, the current role of protestant ideas in the US, as well as American-born religions, such as Mormonism. In order to get credit for the course, students will have to pass a final test. Attendance is encouraged, although not obligatory, and all materials will be posted on Moodle.
