Chinese as a foreign language - basic course is intended for students with no prior knowledge of Chinese. It is designed to develop their basic language skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing, with special emphasis on grammatical accuracy. It also provides basic knowledge about Chinese culture to promote students’ cross-cultural awareness and understanding.
Topics covered in this course include greetings, self-introduction, family, friends, work, education, interests and hobbies, skills and talents, social life, cultural events, shopping, travelling, apartment, food, city, descriptions, etc.
By the end of this course, students should be able to understand simple conversations and short texts related to everyday situations, comprehend and interpret short texts written in simplified Chinese characters that pertain to daily life, solve non-complex textual problems with the aid of dictionaries, express their personal views and opinions on topics of personal interest, describe people, places, events, personal experiences, etc. with comprehensible pronunciation and linguistic accuracy, compose short passages on familiar topics employing appropriate vocabulary and structures. Students also acquire sociocultural competence that strengthen their ability to communicate effectively and appropriately with Chinese people in a variety of social and cultural contexts encountered in daily life.
