1. Introduction to types of translation: presentation of the syllabus,
presentation of materials and sources, introduction to modes of translation
and interpreting.
2. Entertainment (1): translation of texts, lexical exercises to help students
develop their vocabulary in the field.
3. Entertainment (2): translation of texts, lexical exercises to help students
develop their vocabulary in the field.
4. Types of media. The main media outlets in UK, US and Poland (1): an
overview of media, media outlets in the USA, UK and Poland. Translation of
sentences and longer chunks of texts.

an overview of media, media outlets in the USA, UK and Poland. Translation of sentences and longer chunks of texts.
6. Tourism and geography (1): geographical names of well-known places,
landscape description, description of geographical features.

8. Basic science and popular scientific texts (1): physics, biology,
chemistry and maths revision. Translation of a comedy TV series episode
transcript (on scientific topics). Intertextuality and sense of humour as a
challenge for a translator.

10. Art (1): translation of texts, lexical exercises developing students'
vocabulary on the topic, a description of a famous painting and translation
of texts.
11. Art (2): translation of texts, lexical exercises developing students'
vocabulary on the topic, introduction to the topic of music and musical
instruments.
12. Politics and the law (key political issues in modern media) (1):
consecutive interpreting and avista, translation of texts fragments on gender
equality.
13. Politics and the law (key political issues in modern media) (2):
consecutive interpreting and avista, translation of texts fragments on the
environment.
14. In-class translation and proof-reading of tourist texts. Final Test.
15. Final evaluation, translation of a various texts on selected topics.

Learning outcomes
Learning outcomes students reach having completed the course:
1. Students characterize texts from various fields such as: tourism, entertainment, law etc.
2. Students know and use established strategies depending on the texts' style and genre.
3. Students can apply techniques and strategies depending on the text.
4, Students can translate basic sample texts from Polish to English and from English to Polish.
5. Students can solve translation problems and use new vocabulary in translation.
6. Students can gain knowledge and verify information necessary in translation on their own.
Assessment criteria
F – discussion in class: stimulating discussion using questions as prompts, taking advantage of students' knowledge and experience.
F – in-class discussion, pair work, analysis of conclusions in class.
F – vocabulary tests.
F – individual work on the Polish and English texts; various techniques and strategies brought up in discussion.
F – in-class discussion, aiming at checking students' ability to distinguish language and translation mistakes.

P – final test: checking the knowledge of vocabulary, terminology and ability to translate.
