Culture and arts of Australia and New Zealand 15-KIS-ANZ-11
This course aims to study the Australian and New Zealand cultures that were formed as a result of the conquest of both countries and forced assimilation or extermination of indigenous population. Since then both countries have engaged in the process of fashioning and constructing their societies and identities, in which art played a vital role. This course will focus on looking at how the identities and cultures of both countries were expressed and shaped through visual arts. The main trends and achievements of both western-trend derived Australian and New Zealand art and Aboriginal and Maori art will be studied, analyzed and compared. Besides, we will discuss such cultural fields as architecture, film, sports and leisure time. Students will watch selected movies from both cinematographies. To be able to discuss the above issues such concepts as culture, cultural identity, hybridity, intercultural influences, race, ethnicity will be introduced. To appreciate and understand art, basic vocabulary, concept and trends from European art history as well as indigenous cultures will be discussed as well.
