Cultural aspects of translation 15-KAT-TLU-11

The goals of the course include preparing students to translate culture-specific items by using global translation strategies and local translation procedures. Theoretical contents of the course comprise untranslatability, domestication and foreignisation, Polysystem theory, memes of translation, and a taxonomy of translation strategies and procedures. Hands-on translation activities include promotional material, children's literature, historical texts and journalistic texts. The final course evaluation criteria are based on an individual translation project, a group translation project and a final test (translation theory). After successfully completing the course students will be able to translate culture-specific items across a variety of Polish and English texts as well as substantiate their translational approach by referring to theoretical concepts discussed in class

(in Polish) Przekazanie wiedzy teoretycznej mającej przygotować studentów do tłumaczenia tekstów nacechowanych kulturowo w kombinacji językowej polski-angielski. Rozwinięcie zdolności krytycznej analizy tekstów kultury wyjściowej i kultury docelowej oraz rozumienie różnic istniejących między nimi. Rozwinięcie umiejętności przekładu elementów nacechowanych kulturowo poprzez zastosowanie odpowiednich strategii tłumaczeniowych Rozwinięcie umiejętności przekładu indywidualnego oraz grupowego w projektach tłumaczeniowych
