History of British literature after 1900 15-HLBP2-OG-11
The course concentrates on British literature from the end of the 19th century to the present and it offers a chronological survey of major trends and movements in literary history. Through the study and analysis of selected representative texts students learn to understand the relationship between literary texts and their historical and cultural contexts as well as develop their ability of critical reading. The texts discussed in class include (but are not limited to) Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness, T.S. Eliot’s The Waste Land, Virginia Woolf’s Mrs Dalloway, and Coetzee’s Foe.

Learning outcomes
On succesfully completing the course the student will
- Know selected literary texts, major trends, literary conventions in English literature from the late nineteenth century onwards;
- Understand the relationship between literary texts and their historical and cultural contexts;
- Be able to read closely and analyse literary texts in their historical and cultural contexts to discuss their forms and conventions employing appropriate terminology;
- Understand, define and employ literary terms necessary for an analysis of literary texts discussed in class;
- Discuss literary themes and conventions, formulate arguments in speech and writing;
- read and understand critical academic sources and employ them in their analysis.
Assessment criteria
active participation in classes and lectures, questions checking the knowledge and understanding the discussed texts, three assignments testing the ability of analysisng a literary text
The course ends with a written examination (an essay, open questions)
