Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the course and receiving a grade the student should be able to:
1. describe phonetically and phonemically sounds of English;
2. carry out a phonetic analysis of English words and phrases;
3. use basic linguistic terminology from the domains of phonetics and phonology;
4. use the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA);
5. locate information in scholarly publications from the areas of phonetics and phonology;
6. participate in discussions and solve simple phonetic and phonological problems
Assessment criteria
The mode of the final examination is written. The final examination will consist of ten tasks and will last two hours. It will cover both the textbook information as indicated on the handouts and supplementary information provided during the tutorials. The tasks will test your knowledge by applying it to specific linguistic issues and problems. Five tasks will be more theoretical in nature and the other five will consist of practical exercises.
General grading criteria:
(a) factual and theoretical knowledge;
(b) application of acquired knowledge in describing and analysing linguistic phenomena;
(c) active participation in discussions (in class and on-line).
5,0– excellent knowledge, skills, social skills;
4,5 –very good knowledge, skills, social skills;
4,0 – good knowledge, skills, social skills;
3.5 – acceptable knowledge, skills, social skills with gaps;
3.0 – acceptable knowledge, skills, social skills with numerous gaps;
2.0 – unacceptable knowledge, skills, social skills
