Semiotics: scope of semiotic science, definitions of sign, types and functions of signs, examples of linguistic signs
Language science: examples of research on language in psychology, sociology and philosophy; methods and types of scientific inquiry on language data
Systems of linguistics, units of language, features and relations, basics of linguistic analysis in phonetics, phonology, morphology, semantics, syntax
Phonetics and phonology: anatomy of articulatory apparatus, system of sounds; paradygmatic relationships
Applications of phonetic science; speech analysis, recognition and synthesis, how to recognize computer speech?
Semantics and syntax: syntagmatic relationships, pragmatics; applications of research on syntax and semantics, automatic translators and parsers
The future of computer linguistics

Module learning aims

The aim of lectures is introduction to scientific inquiry of language and detailed description of language units, their function and relations. The student will be acquainted with general information on languages of the world and application of linguistics, as well as other sciences about language, such as psychology, sociology or philosophy and computer science.

Understands the basic semiotic notions, is able to define sign and differentiate types of signs and functions
Is conscious about linguistic diversity and language classification problems
Is able to point out sciences of language
Can name units of language and their features
Can describe applications of linguistics

Assessment criteria

General knowledge about the topic will be assessed with dozen of questions about various definitions of language and sign, the scope of lingustic inquiry and linguistic systems like phonetics, morphology, semantics and syntax
