Learning outcomes
At the end of the course and after its successful completion:
Students understand simple, short and clearly articulated utterances, formal and informal, concerning themselves and their direct surroundings (family, shopping, job, entertainment etc.); understand the content of public announcements (bus/train station, airport etc.), telephone information service, weather forecast, simple radio or TV broadcasts; identify guidelines and instructions included in utterances and follow them.
Students are able to read the Greek alphabet, words and phrases, short formal and informal texts; understand the meaning of a notification, a timetable, a weather forecast, a tourist or marketing brochure, a menu , an advertisement, a warning, a simple form, a note, a simple manual etc. and are able to find information needed in these texts; understand the content of a simple text (a letter, a telegram, a postcard, a description of a person); are able to guess meaning through context; follow and understand the plot of a short and simple narrative.
Students build short, simple sentences; use punctuation marks; are able to create a short and logical text, formal or informal, concerning themselves, their surroundings and job; are able to write a short letter, a postcard, a note, an e-mail and fill in a simple form.
Students formulate short utterances; are able to give and ask for information concerning themselves and other people, family etc.; ask questions and give answers concerning everyday life situations; are able to say hello and goodbye, introduce themselves and other people; join in the conversation and take an active part in it when it concerns general topics; are able to express relations in space and time; use Modern Greek in everyday life situations (shop, bank, restaurant, bus/train station etc.).
Students understand and use actively in speech and writing the vocabulary included in the course (level A1 and A2), according to the communication situation.
Students identify and use all the sounds and diphthongs; recognize syllables; know the rules of accentuation; are acquainted with the basic phonetic phenomena of Modern Greek (elision, syncope, apocope); are able to pronounce properly even words they do not know.
Students are acquainted with basic features of the everyday life of the Greeks (mealtimes, working time, free time), living conditions in Greece (job, accommodation), main customs and holidays, interpersonal relations (family), the most important socio-cultural conventions (saying hello and goodbye, courtesy forms, invitations, dress, humour etc.), customs and values of the Greek society; use formal or informal language according to the situation.
Assessment criteria
The prerequisite for the completion of the course is passing all the control tests (min. 60%), handing in all the written assignments and taking an active part in the classes (possible two unexcused absences per semester); the final mark is based on the outcome of the final written and oral exam (<60% - ndst, 60-70% -dst, 71-75% - dst+, 76-85% - db, 86-90% - db+, >91% bdb).
