Practical knowledge of first specialist language 09-ANGPRNJI-46
The main objective of this course is to develop students' mastery of English to the advanced level, comparable to the standard of Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English. This course is the first part of a two-year course, and students reach that level during their third year of studies.
During this course students acquire the following general skills:
- second language mastery
- ability to work in an international environment
- appreciating cultural diversity
More specifically, students:
- can understand all sorts of written texts, including finer points of complex texts;
- can comprehend all kinds of spoken text, including colloquial asides and cultural allusions;
- can produce short and longer speeches on various issues;
- can write formal texts with grammatical and lexical accuracy;
- can make practical and effective use of their knowledge of grammar and vocabulary.

Students can understand a wide range of complex, longer factual and literary texts, being aware of nuances of meaning.
Students can understand extended speech on a variety of factual and abstract topics, detecting implied meanings.
Students can express themselves fluently
and spontaneously for social and academic purposes – also with native speakers of English – using appropriate style for a given context and paying attention to accuracy.
Students can write clear, concise texts on a variety of topics, paying attention to accuracy. They can write practised genres in an appropriate style and register, making effective use of linking devices.
Students have gained extensive cultural knowledge of the English-speaking countries.
Assessment criteria
To complete the course students have to:
- write a series of tests and get at least 60 % of the points;
- deliver a complete set of listening reports based on radio podcasts;
- give a required number of oral presentations in class
- write essays
- max. 2 absences allowed per semester.
The final grade is based on the result of the final examination.
