The subject of the lecture comprises: equipment and techniques applied to goldsmithery in early medieval times; ancient traditions (Egyptian, Greek, Roman and Byzantine); west-European goldsmithery (Merovingian and Carolingian); Slavic goldsmithery (Great Moravian, West- and East-Slavic); Scandinavian goldsmithery; Hungarian goldsmithery.

Student:
1) gains advanced knowledge of early medieval goldsmithery in particular regions of Europe;
2) understands the meaning of jewellery for the study of medieval culture;
3) gets skills required to recognise cultural identity of early medieval goldsmithery works; to identify crafting techniques, to reconstruct fragmented medieval European jewels; to comprehend reading of the subject literature; to handle correctly the basic concepts and terms of this field; to interpret the obtained sources in the broader cultural context.
