Classical Philosophy and Its Reception 03-AP-CPR

Course learning content:
- the general view on ancient philosophy, its periods and representants; information about the modern sources of knowledge about ancient philosophy,
- chosen topics of ancient philosophy, their authors and texts,
- chosen aspects of reception of ancient thought in later European philosophy,
- chosen elements of philosophical transcultural comparatistics.

Module learning aims

Course aims: - to gain general knowledge of classical philosophy and detailed knowledge of the philosophical concepts discussed in class, - to gain knowledge of the development of ancient philosophical concepts up to the modern times, - to gain ability to interpret and discuss abstract texts in English, - to understand the conditions and causes of changes in understanding of basic philosophical ideas in time.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this course, a student will:
- have general knowledge of the ancient philosophy and of the main method of its interpretation,
- have specific knowledge of some elements of ancient thought and their reception in European culture,
- know the ancient philosophical terminology,
- critically interpret the ancient texts (in translation) and their influence on later thought,
- know how to find and use information about ancient philosophy from different sources,
- understand the importance of ancient thought in the cultural heritage of mankind,
- appreciates the cultural heritage of mankind as a result of different ideas, paradigms and perspectives.

Assessment criteria

The teacher will asses in what degree the student has obtained the knowledge of the ancient philosophy, its problems, representants, texts and sources, as well as the ability to discuss philosophical problems, interpret chosen ancient philosophical texts (in translations) and their influence on later thought. Depending on the degree of fulfilling these criteria, the student will receive one of the fillowing grades:

very good (bdb; 5,0)
good plus (+db; 4,5)
good (db; 4,0)
satisfactory plus (+dst; 3,5)
satisfactory (dst; 3,0)
unsatisfactory (ndst; 2,0)
